Immediate Dentures
At Raymond Street Dentures, we recognize that transitioning to full or partial dentures for the first time is often the most confronting part of your dental journey. We make every effort to ensure our patients are well-informed and supported as they take this difficult but sometimes necessary step.

A typical treatment plan will involve the construction of a temporary denture prior to having your teeth extracted, which is worn for a period of at least 6 months. If you do not have a preferred dentist we can refer to one of several excellent dentists in sale and surrounding towns, and will liaise with them to ensure we have your new denture completed before your extraction appointment.

After extractions your mouth will undergo a process called resorption, during which the gums that had previously supported the roots of the teeth will shrink rapidly, and the denture will feel progressively looser. This can usually be managed adequately using denture adhesive as well as one or more temporary relines.

Once the 6 month healing and shrinking period has elapsed, we can either reline the original denture (provided the bite and appearance of the teeth are acceptable) or begin construction on a replacement denture, which will not only fit better, but also gives us an opportunity to refine the appearance since we can now try a wax trial denture or mock-up before finishing the denture.

Due to the rapid changes that occur after extractions, patients wearing Immediate Dentures will often experience issues such as loose fitting dentures, sore spots, ulcers, and difficulty eating and chewing at a drastically higher rate than those who are replacing existing dentures. We advise patients to expect multiple visits for adjustments in the weeks and months after being issued with an immediate denture. It is important during this period to remain positive and be proactive around dealing with these issues. We endeavour to provide appointments as quickly as possible for adjustments to help support you through this period.
